CADR Questions and Answers
What makes Central Alabama Disaster Relief different?
First, I must say there are some larger, amazing Disaster Relief Organizations out there doing Amazing Work. For example, the Red Cross, Samaritan's Purse, Salvation Army, Baptist Men's, Methodist Disaster Relief and others, all deserve our thanks and support. We like them all, and thank them all for their hard work.
We are much smaller, so we have little red tape and can react within minutes to a disaster. We are local, again allowing us to react fast. Because we are local, we are present to help in all stages of Disaster Relief and any donated funds are usually spent locally.
The downside is, because we are smaller, and local, we do not have the funding the others have, thus leading to less resources. As we grow, I hope to have consistent sources of funding.
Do I have to pay to be a member? Is there a commitment a how much time does it take?
All great questions, thank for asking. No, there is never a fee to be a member. No, there is no commitment at all. You do what you can, when you can. This is an all volunteer team. Each job can take different amounts of time, but no job is time consuming. I try to have some sort of event every quarter. This could be a simple get together to a day of training. Of course, in the event of a disaster, the disaster dictates how much time is needed. However, again, do as much or as little as you wish.
Do we just respond to major disasters and if so, how far will we travel?
What a great question! Our primary service area is Elmore, Autauga and Montgomery Counties. However, the need for help will dictate how far we will travel. Of course, again, because we are local you will not be asked to travel, this is our primary area. Also, disasters come in all shapes and sizes. We do small projects, which we call routine (think building a wheel chair ramp or clearing a driveway and large ones, we call special (think tornado).
